Setting Up Search Engine Keywords |
Once you set up your Store categories, it is extremely important to set up your keywords. You can customize these keywords to increase your chances of potential buyers finding your store pages when using search engines such as MSN, Google, Yahoo, and so on. eBay uses these keywords to create page Titles and Meta Tags that help search engines better understand and present your eBay store pages. Use keywords your potential buyers are likely to search for and be sure to select keywords that are consistent with the content on your page. For example, use words in your Store category names and item titles as keywords. Review the text on each page (store description, category names, item titles) to ensure that you are using appropriate keywords that are related to your page content and use keywords for the category or sub category that is showing on that page. Keyword spamming is the practice of repeating the same keyword too many times or using inappropriate keywords that are unrelated to the content of your page for the purpose of gaining higher ranking in search engines. Since most search engines have the ability to determine whether the use of keywords and the repetition frequency on a page are appropriate, spamming keywords could negatively affect your page ranking or even cause your Store pages to be removed from search engines' indexes. Bottom line, select keywords that are consistent with the content on your page. Don't forget that if at a later date you add or revise any store categories or sub-categories, go back and add or revise your keywords! Click on Manage My Store Under Store Design Click on "Search Engine Keywords" You will be at the main "All Categories" page ![]() You will see the keywords currently used on your Store pages which are randomly selected keywords by eBay from each page and these should be refined. To the right beside each Store page (includes Store Front Page, main Store categories and Store custom pages) is an "Edit" link. Click on "Edit" and on the next page, enter in your keywords. For this example, I clicked on Edit for Store Front Page (the home page). ![]() Once you are satisfied with your keywords, click "Save". The next page will be the keywords have been successfully saved. Click on "Customize keywords for another page" You will now repeat this process for each page (each store category and each custom page) until you are finished each page which is showing on the "Category: All Categories" screen. If you do not use sub-categories, you are finished! If you have sub categories, you will notice that some of the categories are links. Click on the link for the first one and you will be at the next level of sub-categories for that category. ![]() For this example, I clicked on our Belt Buckle category and I have four sub-categories under Belt Buckles; Handgun, Rifle, Shotgun and Commercial. ![]() Follow the same process, by clicking on "Edit" to the right of each sub-category and enter the keywords. Once you are satisfied with your keywords, click "Save". The next page will be the keywords have been successfully saved. Click on "Customize keywords for another page" This will bring you back to the main All Category page and you will have to click on the category link to get back to where you were. It may be a bit confusing until you understand the flow of where you are. You will now repeat this process for each sub-category until you are finished. If you do not use further sub-categories, you are finished! If you have third level sub categories, you will notice that some of the sub-categories are links as well. For this example, I clicked on the Handgun sub-category I am at Belt Buckles > Handgun > I will now have to "Edit" two third level sub-categories; Brass and Nickel. ![]() Follow the same process, by clicking on "Edit" to the right of each third level sub-category and enter the keywords. Once you are satisfied with your keywords, click "Save". The next page will be the keywords have been successfully saved. Click on "Customize keywords for another page" This will bring you back to the main All Category page and you will have to click on the category link and then the sub-category link to get back to where you were. Again, it may be a bit confusing until you understand the flow of where you are. You will now repeat this process for each third level sub-category until you are finished. |
